Your Therapist in Sugar Land explains 5 Ways To De-stress This Holiday Season

Do you get anxious thinking about all the meal planning and gift buying you need to do this holiday season? Or do you feel overwhelmed thinking about spending so much time with extended family? Does the thought of budgeting your bank account for the last quarter of the year seems difficult?

Money and family are two common forms of stress, and both are common denominators during the holiday season.

Stress affects everyone differently, but common symptoms include:

  • Anxiety

  • Body aches

  • Irritability

  • Sleeplessness

  • Sadness

Stress during the holidays can affect anyone, even children. It can be overwhelming to find the perfect gift, find time to attend every party, or even just trying to check off your traditions checklist. It can also be a difficult time for those who have lost friends or family members.

However, taking care of your mental health can help you enjoy the holidays more!

Here are 5 ways to de-stress this holiday season according to your therapist in Sugar Land…

  1. Set realistic expectations. The holidays don’t have to be perfect or be the same every year. Circumstances change and families grow, so your traditions can too! Choose a few things to hold on to, but don’t stress doing everything the same each year. Also, it’s ok to say no! If saying yes to everything makes you feel overwhelmed and resentful, say no.

  2. Keep up with healthy habits. It’s ok to overindulge a little during the holiday season, but keep it in moderation. Don’t let November and December turn into a free-for-all. Keep your healthy eating habits, get plenty of sleep and continue your exercise routine. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs and try deep-breathing exercises, yoga, or daily meditation.

  3. Don’t forget what really matters. Holidays can feel hectic with long lines, crowds, and traffic. Try not to get overwhelmed with all the hustle and bustle. If you find yourself getting frustrated, use these moments to reflect on the good. Can you make a way to make it more pleasant? Think about kind gestures or compliments you can give to others.

  4. Acknowledge your feelings. Take time for yourself and your feelings. Give yourself alone time or time to talk to friends, family members, or your therapist. Reflect on everything that’s happened the last year and identify emotions that overwhelm you.

  5. Seek professional help. Last but not least, if you find yourself feeling continuously sad or anxious, talk to your doctor or mental health professional. Despite everything you can do and the distractions of the season, you may still feel like you cannot handle your daily chores, routines, or work. Seek help if you need it.

Many clients find therapy helpful during stressful times of their life. Therapy may not be needed year-round, and could just be temporary to help relieve anxiety and stress.
